About
“I am a wound and a sword, a victim, and an executioner.” In the 1960s, global cinema was in the midst of a new wave of filmmaking. Goddard, Bunuel, and Truffaut were changing the French film landscape; Forman and Chytilova were making waves in Czechoslovakia; and Cassavetes was bringing startling realism to the New Hollywood movement. In Japan, the film world was expanding massively with fresh opportunities from studios and boundless creativity from a new generation of filmmakers. While many films from this era are filled with subtextual nods to homosexuality and queer-coded characters, few engaged in the overt representation of queer culture like Toshio Matsumoto’s FUNERAL PARADE OF ROSES.
